Abstract:

Our physical bodies play a central role in shaping human experience in the world, understanding of the world, and interactions in the world. In this paper, we present theories of embodiment — from psychology, sociology, and philosophy — as they apply to interaction design, for providing a language and set of themes for interaction design: thinking through doing, performance, visibility, risk, and thick practice. We introduce aspects of human engagement in the world that designers should attend to. We also describe techniques for integrating interactions with bits and atoms to merge the benefits of the two worlds.

Keywords:
Embodiment, bodies, embodied interaction, ubiquitous computing, phenomenology, interaction design
